Overview
Ball pythons (Python regius) are one of the most popular pet snakes due to their calm temperament and manageable size. This care sheet covers the basics of proper husbandry.
Provided below is JRReptiles take on ball python care.
Enclosure
- Size: 10 gallon tub or tank for juveniles, upgrade as visually necessary. Provide adequate space for the snake to stretch out. There should not be a screen lid open to air, if you have a screen lid, it's recommended to completely cover it with HVAC tape or your preference to keep humidity inside of the tank.
- Substrate: Coco husk, cypress mulch, or paper towels, this is generally based on preference.
- Hides: One on the warm side, one on the cool side.
- Clutter: Add decor for security (branches, fake plants).
Heating
- Warm side: 88–95°F
- Cool side: 76–80°F
- Heat source: Under-tank heater or radiant heat panel with thermostat.
Humidity
- Maintain 80-100% humidity. This is pertinent to maintaining a healthy snake.
- Provide a humidity hide or mist as needed.
Feeding
- Feed appropriately sized rodents.
- Juveniles: every 5–7 days; adults: every 10–14 days.
- Always feed inside the enclosure unless advised otherwise.
Handling
- Wait 48 hours after feeding before handling.
- Support the body and avoid fast movements.
- Limit handling to short sessions at first.
Health Signs
- Clear eyes, firm body, no stuck shed.
- Watch for wheezing, mouth gaping, or excessive hiding as signs of illness.
Shedding
- Snakes should generally shed in one complete piece, although you should not worry if they have a hard time with this in a colder season.
- Soak or provide humidity boost if shedding issues occur.
